Autohaven feature vehicles

Aston Martin DB4 Series 5 Vantage, 1963 California sage metallic with suede green connolly hide

Autohaven are delighted to welcome this superb Aston Martin DB4 Series 5 Vantage into the collection, fresh from a total restoration by Aston Martin Heritage experts Aston Engineering spanning a 4-year period.

Just 40 cars were manufactured with the Vantage Special Series engine specification and consequently the Vantage versions are now highly collectible. The original James Bond ‘Goldfinger’ car used in filming was, in fact, a DB4 Series 5 Vantage as they look virtually identical and the DB5 had not been launched.

The changes to the DB4 Special Series Vantage model were at the top end. The cylinder head face was machined to raise the compression ratio to 9:1 and the larger diameter valves of the DB4 GT engine were fitted. The inlets had a 2-inch diameter and the exhaust valves a 1.875-inch diameter. There were three SU carburettors instead of the standard car’s two, and they were fitted with the oil cooler that was optional on the standard car. Transmission was a 4-speed transmission with overdrive on 4th gear. The power output increased to a healthy 264 bhp.

The Series 5 cars had an electric fan fitted as standard, which solved the hot-running issues that affected earlier models. The faired-in headlamps were a distinguishing feature of cars with Vantage specification, and the distinctive rear lamp clusters had three round lamps with shallow chromed bases. The lower bonnet scoop further added to the improved appearance.

Our car was delivered new on 1st August 1963 by Francis Motors Ltd to a Mr F. Ginster of Birmingham. Mr Ginster was a well-known car collector and the Aston Martin DB4 joined other Aston Martins, Jaguars and a Bentley Continental in his collection. The factory build sheet confirms the matching numbers, and notes its non-standard equipment Motorola 818 radio, Sundym windscreen and Britax front seatbelts. The DB4 still wears its valuable original number plate and has its instruction book, two sets of keys, tool roll, jack and battery trickle charger also present.

In 1972 a Mr A. Taylor, who was a motoring enthusiast and the Tuning Manager at Mangoletsi, Knutsford, purchased the car and kept using it until 1980, after which he put it into dry storage. Hexagon Classics purchased the Aston Martin Vantage in 2014, and commissioned the no-expense-spared total restoration of this special car. Presented in classic period Californian Sage livery, the car benefits from an Aston Engineering handling kit, a 4.2 litre engine capacity increasing maximum output to 281 bhp, electronic power steering, and sits on its gorgeous new Borrani 72-spoke wire wheels.

The car is currently en-route to NZ.

The Fastest Series 1, E Type Jaguar in the World

This car has an amazing NZ and International ownership and race history, having verifiably recorded the fastest known speed in the world, for a series 1 E type Jaguar of 170.3 MPH.

This incredible speed, was achieved in 1964 at the Ohakea Air base in the Manawatu, driven by its original owner Sybil Lupp incredibly, whilst accompanied by a local motor racing reporter.

Sybil, was a very accomplished racing driver, starting her career in very early MG’s, typically besting most of the racing males of her time, she set and held many records in circuit, rallying and indeed hill Climbs.

This E type roadster was purchased new by Sybil in 1962, from Jaguar cars at Coventry in the UK. From the outset, as a fully qualified motor engineer, Sybil performed all her own mechanical work and race tuning on this and the many other racing cars that she owned over the years.

Whilst E type jaguars reportedly could achieve lSOMPH when released, one would have to have been an exceptional, very experienced and accomplished driver to achieve this, which makes Sybils record speed of 170.3MPH, so much more extraordinary.

Sybil’s tuning to achieve this feat, is understood to have included a Weslake tuned cylinder head, matched to a Jaguar “D Type” camshaft, with specifically jetted and tuned triple SU carburettors, fitted with trumpet style air-cleaners, similar to those seen on the car today.

In the 60 years of its existence; this car has of course had many owners, throughout NZ, the UK and Europe, including at one point, residing for several years, in a well-known German museum. It has featured on the cover of SNG Barratt’s catalogue, with UK registration when it had been repainted red and had black upholstery, it has also been known to have had a white exterior at one Stage.

The car was eventually returned to NZ after being purchased by an Auckland Barrister and classic car enthusiast /collector.

The original NZ ownership papers, with the full list of NZ owners has very fortunately been retained, just as the car retains its original numbers matching engine and drivetrain.

The current custodian, aware of its very significant history, purchased it a decade or so ago and set about restoring it to as close as possible, to its original glory.

This required a complete ground up restoration, which included bare metal stripping, repainting and upholstering to its original colours as you see here today.

1930 Cadillac V16 Sport Phaeton

This 1930 Cadillac V16 Sport Phaeton is perhaps the pièce de résistance of the Autohaven Collection. Extremely rare, fast and absolutely gorgeous it’s a vehicle that would be right at home at any concours event or automotive museum anywhere in the world.

For both its visual and technical attributes the V16 itself is a thing of beauty. The heart of the Cadillac V16 was of course its magnificent engine, delivering 185bhp. Even more impressive was its all important low speed torque: 434 Nm at 1,500 rpm, which assured velvet-like low speed operation. Thanks to a hydraulic valve-silencing device, the V16’s overhead valves were well mannered and quite which set new benchmarks for smooth, silent and superbly impressive performance.

Driven through a three-speed manual transmission, front and rear semi-elliptic leaf springs with hydraulic dampers, and four-wheel vacuum assisted mechanical brakes the driving experience of this remarkable machine is thoroughly modern.

This particular car has its own interesting history. It’s original owner was Hollywood actor Richard Arlen, one of the biggest stars of the early years of cinema. Arlen sold it in the early 30s as his career waned. The car remained hidden for some 20 years, and then it made its own movie debut, in the 1964 film The Carpetbaggers.

Now entirely restored to it’s former glory this very, very special vehicle is a must see for any car lover.

29 Land Speed Records and still going strong!

This 2008 Honda CBR600RR is one of just two Erion Racing 600 Formula Extreme Motorcycles that were ridden by Jake Zemke (with Rick Hobbs as technical director) during the final year of the 2008 AMA Formula Xtreme Series. No expense was spared in building this motorcycle. The Formula Xtreme professional road racing class was run and sanctioned by the AMA from 1997 to 2008. Motorcycles were homologated and had to be available from retail dealers and legal for street use in the United States. The rules were liberal when compared to other AMA road racing classes, and the intent of the Formula Xtreme class was to include a diverse group of motorcycles. This motorcyle won both the 2007 and 2008 Xtreme Series and is listed in the USA Motorcycle hall of fame.

The chassis, engine and bodywork modifications that were allowed also meant a more diverse group of manufacturers entered this series, including Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki andYamaha. In the 2008 season, BMW, Ducati, Triumph and Buell joined the series. The most well-known event on the annual Formula Xtreme calendar was the Daytona 200, which was not only the inaugural race each year for the Formula Xtreme season but also the longest event on the Formula Xtreme calendar. The 2008 season was the final year of the Formula Extreme with Daytona Motorsports Group taking over the AMA Pro Racing circuit in 2009 and replacing it with the more controlled Daytona Sportbike class. At the end of the 2008 season, the series was dissolved because the privateer racer could not compete with the deep pockets of the factory teams.

In 2009, this motorcycle was purchased by Van and Cathy Butler from Erion Racing with numerous spares, and the bike was subsequently modified for Land Speed racing with performance modifications not allowed in the AMA Formula Extreme Series. Cathy Butler was the rider of the bike, with her husband Van serving as crew chief and family friend Rick Hobbs-Canadian Motorcycle Hall of fame inductee and original builder of this motorcycle-helping on the bike.

Since 2009, Cathy Butler set 29 Land Speed records on this CBR600RR, 14 of which were set at the El Mirage Dry Lake on dirt and 15 of which were set at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The last time this bike ran was at the Bonneville Nationals World Finals in October 2020, setting at two-run average of 185.062mph.

2022 Rolls Royce Phantom

As the flagship model in the Rolls-Royce lineup, the stately Phantom features an extraordinary range of exclusive high-end features making it one of the most covetable vehicles ever made.

At the heart of the Phantom, a 563-hp twin-turbocharged V12 engine delivers enough power to propel this two and a half tonne masterpiece from 0 to 60 in just 5.1 seconds.

Since the elimination of the Bentley Mulsanne, the Phantom is the only remaining sedan in its class and with giant internal combustion engines slowly being phased out it is perhaps the very last of the breed. As a total package there is simply no new car on the planet that can match the opulence, superlative ride comfort and hushed refinement of the remarkable Rolls Royce Phantom.

Rarely seen on the road and with only a handful in NZ, Autohaven is perhaps the only opportunity you’ll have to see this incredible machine in person.
